The organization grew from a community-focused hospital arts program developed by our chair on two Military installations in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. Through the hospital program and partnerships with the USO of Metro Washington-Baltimore, Combat Paper NJ, Workhouse Arts Center, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, and Strathmore Performing Arts Center among others, more than 300 participants have exhibited artwork in galleries, published writing, and/or performed original poems and musical compositions in the last seven years. CBAW formed to continue to offer these kinds of programs to those ineligible to participate in the hospital programs,

Community Building Art Works seeks to connect Veterans with existing arts organizations and communities in the region through arts and humanities programming designed to promote dialogue and understanding across a wide range of experiences, bringing mixed groups of Veterans and civilians to engage in dialogue that uses art as a tool for rigorous thought.

In January 2017, Community Building Art Works led and produced its first public event, a staged Veterans group poetry performance at the Lansburgh Theatre directed by  actor Jeffrey Wright. The event drew more than 400 audience members from the military and civilian communities. Other activities have included a writing workshop in May 2017 with National Book Award winning author Phil Klay in partnership with Politics and Prose Bookstore, a scholarship drive (currently ongoing) for 8 veterans to attend the Transformative Language Arts Network’s Power of Words Conference in the summer of 2017, and a visual art exhibit at Gallery B in October 2017.

We are always looking to grow our community. Please Contact Us for more information.
